DAY 8 - Why Many Chow Chows (Like Zoey) Can’t Handle Chicken – And What to Feed Instead!

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering, “Why is my Chow Chow always itchy?” or “Why does Zoey get an upset stomach after eating chicken?”—you’re not alone!

Chicken allergies and sensitivities are surprisingly common in Chow Chows, and unfortunately, chicken is in almost everything—from kibble to treats, even supplements! So, if your furry lion-dog is dealing with constant itching, tummy troubles, or ear infections, chicken might be the hidden culprit.

Signs Your Chow Chow Might Be Allergic to Chicken

Zoey had her fair share of digestive issues before we figured out she couldn’t tolerate chicken. Some of the most common symptoms include:

🐾 Itchy skin – Constant scratching, licking, or chewing at paws.

🐾 Ear infections – Frequent head shaking or smelly ears.

🐾 Digestive issues – Vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, or gas.

🐾 Dull coat or hair loss – If their once-fluffy fur starts thinning, it could be food-related.

Does any of this sound familiar? If so, it might be time to swap out that chicken-filled kibble for a better alternative.

What to Feed Instead of Chicken?

Zoey's Allergies During Her Intolerance/Allergy to Chicken

Luckily, there are plenty of healthy and delicious alternatives that your Chow Chow will love! Zoey is now on a fresh, homemade diet free from poultry, and she’s thriving. Here are some chicken-free protein sources to consider:

🥩 Lamb – A great option for dogs with food sensitivities. Plus, it’s full of essential amino acids!

🐟 Fish (Salmon, Sardines, Whitefish) – Loaded with omega-3s for healthy skin and a shiny coat.

🦆 Duck – A lean, easy-to-digest meat that’s perfect for pups with poultry allergies

🥩 Venison – A novel protein that’s great for allergy-prone dogs.

🦃 Turkey – Some dogs tolerate turkey better than chicken, but introduce it slowly.

🌱 Plant-Based Options (Lentils, Chickpeas, Quinoa) – While not a sole protein source, they’re a great addition to a balanced diet.

Fresh, Homemade Food – The Best Solution for Sensitive Chows!

After switching Zoey to a fresh, homemade diet, we saw a huge improvement in her coat, digestion, and energy levels. If you’re looking to go fresh too, here’s a basic meal idea:

✔ Protein: Lamb, fish, or duck

✔ Veggies: Cooked pumpkin, sweet potatoes, or spinach

✔ Healthy Grains: Brown rice or quinoa

✔ Good Fats: Coconut oil or fish oil

Just make sure to balance the nutrients—or consult a vet for the best diet plan!

Final Woof: Is Your Chow Chow Chicken-Free?

If your Chow is constantly itching, dealing with ear infections, or has tummy troubles, it might be time to cut out chicken. Zoey is so much happier (and fluffier) now that she’s on a poultry-free, fresh diet—and your pup might be too!
