DAY 10 - Dehydration in Dogs: Signs, Prevention & Why Chow Chows Are at Risk

If you have a Chow Chow, you already know they’re majestic, fluffy, and incredibly independent. But did you know that their thick double coat makes them more prone to dehydration and overheating than other breeds?

Zoey, our beloved Chow, once showed signs of dehydration during a hot summer walk. That’s when we realized just how important hydration is for dogs—especially for Chows!

In this guide, we’ll break down what dehydration in dogs looks like, how to prevent it, and why it’s a serious concern for Chow Chows.

What is Dehydration in Dogs?

Dehydration happens when a dog loses more fluids than they take in, affecting their body’s ability to function properly. Water is essential for digestion, circulation, joint health, and temperature regulation—without it, dogs can quickly become weak and sick.

🚨 Severe dehydration can lead to kidney failure, heatstroke, and even death if left untreated.

Why Are Chow Chows More Prone to Dehydration?

🐶 Thick Double Coat – Chow Chows have a dense fur coat that traps heat, making them overheat faster than other breeds.

🌡️ Low Heat Tolerance – They struggle in hot and humid climates because they were originally bred for cold weather.

🏃‍♂️ Low Thirst Drive – Unlike some breeds that constantly drink water, Chow Chows can be stubborn about hydrating, which increases the risk of dehydration.

💦 They Don’t Show Signs Immediately – Chows are naturally reserved and independent, meaning they might not show discomfort until dehydration is severe.

Because of all these factors, keeping a Chow Chow hydrated requires extra care!

Signs of Dehydration in Dogs

If your dog isn’t drinking enough water, watch out for these symptoms:

🔹 Excessive Panting – Dogs pant to cool down, but if it’s excessive, they’re losing too much moisture.

🔹 Dry Nose & Gums – A hydrated dog should have moist gums and a wet nose. Dryness = dehydration.

🔹 Lethargy & Weakness – If your pup is suddenly low on energy, dehydration might be the reason.

🔹 Sunken Eyes – Dehydration causes loss of moisture in the eyes, making them appear dull or sunken.

🔹 Loss of Appetite – If your dog refuses food, they may also be lacking water.

🔹 Thick, Sticky Saliva – Hydrated dogs have clear, watery saliva—thick saliva is a red flag!

🐾 Quick Test: Gently pinch your dog’s skin near their neck. If it snaps back immediately, they’re hydrated. If it stays up or slowly returns to place, they need water ASAP!

How to Prevent Dehydration in Dogs

💦 1. Always Provide Fresh, Clean Water

✔ Keep multiple water bowls around the house.

✔ Change the water at least twice a day to keep it fresh.

✔ Use a dog water fountain—some dogs (like Zoey) prefer moving water!

🍉 2. Add Hydrating Foods

✔ Give water-rich foods like cucumber, watermelon (seedless - in moderation), or bone broth.

✔ Avoid salty or processed treats that increase thirst.

🚶 3. Avoid Exercising in the Heat

✔ Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening.

✔ Take breaks in the shade and avoid hot pavement.

✔ Carry a portable dog water bottle during walks.

❄️ 4. Use Cooling Methods

✔ Provide a cooling mat or wet towel for them to lie on.

✔ Offer ice cubes as a fun way to hydrate or ice treats!

I often freeze pumpkin purée, goat milk kefir, and turmeric with lamb/beef broth for Zoey. Her favorite? A spinach & mint frozen treat layered with coconut oil—cool, healthy, and delicious!

✔ Keep your home well-ventilated or air-conditioned.

🐶 5. Encourage Drinking (Especially for Stubborn Chows!)

✔ Mix low-sodium lamb or beef broth into their water.

✔ Try flavored water additives designed for dogs.

✔ Use a shallow, wide water bowl—some Chows don’t like deep bowls touching their fur!

What to Do If Your Dog Is Dehydrated

🚨 If your dog shows severe signs of dehydration, take action immediately!

✔ Move them to a cool, shaded area.

✔ Offer small amounts of water (not too much at once!).

✔ Apply cool (not ice-cold) water to their paws, belly, and ears.

✔ Call your vet if symptoms don’t improve—they might need IV fluids.

Final Woof: Keep Your Chow Chow Hydrated & Healthy!

Chow Chows, like Zoey, need extra attention when it comes to hydration. Their thick fur, stubborn nature, and low thirst drive put them at higher risk of dehydration—so it’s up to us to keep their water intake in check!

✅ Always provide fresh water

✅ Use cooling methods to prevent overheating

✅ Incorporate hydrating foods into their diet

✅ Monitor for dehydration symptoms—early detection is key!
